Xyz Material Monsters (エクシーズ素材, Ekushīzu sozai), called Overlay Units in anime and manga, are the result of monsters being used in an Xyz Summon. When an Xyz Monster is summoned by this procedure, the monsters used in the summon are placed underneath the monster instead of being sent to the Graveyard, but they are not considered to be on the field either, so their effects are no longer applied. Because monsters being used as Xyz Material are not considered to leave the field either, any of their effects that would activate upon leaving the field also cannot be applied, such as those of "Sangan" or "Reborn Tengu".

Some effects, like that of "Number 101: Silent Honor ARK", allow to attach monsters as Xyz Material after the summon of the Xyz Monster, and sometimes also Spell and Trap Cards. This is specially useful in the case of monsters that gain more powerful effects based on the number of Xyz Materials attached to them (such as "Number 86: Heroic Champion - Rhongomyniad"), or when Special Summoning the Xyz Monster from the Graveyard or while it is banished (such as with "Xyz Reborn"), since it will come with no materials when summoned from these places, which usually makes them much less useful.

These monsters are usually used to allow the Xyz Monster to activate its effects, such as "Number 17: Leviathan Dragon", or to provide it with extra effects. Removing an Xyz Material(s) from underneath an Xyz Monster is called detaching. If the Xyz Monster leaves the field, its Xyz Materials are sent to the Graveyard.

Since July 2017, when there is no possible ambiguity with materials used for the summoning of other types of monsters, TCG and OCG card texts refer to them simply as "materials".
